In a few, short months a young, stunningly beautiful real estate agent’s life veers into mythology, occult and the paranormal. Shockingly she learns from a newspaper that her lawyer husband hacked into another law firm’s computer, stole documents to seduce a woman, and was axed for his offense. Once divorced, a nothing-down real estate investment pops up, with a curious hook She must buy with an acquaintance who declares she is the Greek goddess Persephone sent to Earth on the singular mission of persuading the agent to believe she is who she says she is. The agent cannot resist. She becomes entangled in an extortionate law suit with her tenants who refuse to vacate the flat she buys to live in and has to share Persephone’s. And she falls uncontrollably for a man who flatters she is more beautiful than Helen of Troy, who proclaims he is none other than the Titan Prometheus and has orchestrated the recent occurrences in her life, who tenders as proof of his divinity and manipulation a few good miracles or illusions – she cannot tell which – and a chilling, intimate account of her current woes, and who offers her immortality in exchange for her believing Persephone. Fascinated, charmed, infatuated and entrapped by the two putative gods whom her best friend counsels to dismiss as cult figures, she must choose between two versions of these life-changing events, one based on reason and the other on faith.

From the moment I started to read Persephone's Agent I was drawn in. Julie and Persephone meet on a plane under unusual circumstances... From then on, I was mesmerized by their story. It combines Greek mythology and the beauty of San Francisco. R.J. Spjut marries it all together in a non-stop read. The descriptions of San Francisco made me feel as though I was right there experiencing each moment with them. Congratualtions on a fascinating read... looking forward to the next book.

"Persephone's Agent" is a remarkable piece of fiction. Spjuit does a masterful job of capturing everything San Francisco, and creating a very believable world populated with some unbelievable characters. Be prepared to read it in one sitting - putting it aside is not an option!
A fast read and entertaining story, with interesting information on the Victorians of San Francisco and idiosyncrasies of property owning relationships.
I know it is cliche, but I could not put this book down. I found the story very compelling and unusual with an ending that was satisfying but not predictable. I enjoyed the characters, their relationships and dialogue. Very interesting to learn about the crazy San Francisco real estate market and the world(s)of the gods. The descriptions of the food was a riot and made me hungry -what a bright touch! I cannot wait to see what RJ Spjut comes up with next!
RJ Spjut has delivered a carefully written, tension filled first novel, full of the local color of San Francisco's Hayes Valley. His characters are believable, folks you might know...your local real estate agent, your best friend, young women who might be a daughter. Yet they encounter the mystery of a goddess among them, and deal with it, just like the reader might..with healthy skepticism. Little by little the reader is drawn into the realm of unreality and finally cannot wait to see what will happen next. Spjut's style is full of vivid descriptions of places and people, so he achieves a perfect counterbalance of what is real with what cannot possibly be happening! Great read; you will finish it in day or two because you cannot put it down.
RJ Spjut admits us into the closed world of San Francisco food, culture, real estate and open-mindedness - often to the point of absurdity. With desert dry wit, Mr. Spjut intertwines the often unknowable fundamentals of life with humankind's presumption that it "knows it all". With numerous Kafkaesque twists, coupled with very readable style, Persephone's Agent is a remarkable piece of fiction. Much like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil introduced us to the characters and culture of Savannah and single handedly increased tourism there, RJ Spjut's novel will only increase the tremendous pull that San Francisco has on the world, by affectionately illuminating the City by the Bay's charms, all while delivering a tongue-in-cheek message about human being's place in the world. I only hope this is the first of many novels to come.
After 20 adult years in San Francisco, I moved a few years ago to New York City. Of course, I left a part of me in San Francisco, and this marvelous book brought it back to me. With a deft hand and native's knowledge of the place, Spjut nails all of those eccentricities that help to define San Francisco. From the locals' preoccupation with real estate and near obsession about food and ingredients, Spjut brings the City to life. And he does so in one of the most clever literary tricks I have seen in a long time, namely making San Francisco seem routine by bringing to it some extraordinary characters straight out of Greek mythology. This book is must read for anyone who has ever spent any time in San Francisco or who has ever wanted to. Bravo and thank you.
With dry humor, fast pace and an insider's knowledge, Mr. Spjut gives you a fun trip through San Francisco. He adds his own twists to the images of the City focused upon by the media, such as the excessive food provenance on menus, and he takes you on a wonderful docent's tour of Victorian homes and restoration. He makes it obvious why a god would choose to live in San Francisco. And on this entertaining background he develops a tale that mines the tension between true faith and a refusal to believe without objective proof--which in this case becomes a stubborn refusal to believe no matter the objective proof. I was afraid that he would cop out with a warm and fuzzy ending. But he did not. A great read. Well done, Mr. Spjut.
