I really enjoyed this book he has put together and laughed, winced, and shook my head the whole way through. Thank Jesus for Jeff Bryan. Honest, artful, delightful, miserable this is a unique contribution to religion literature, but also to the memoir genre.
I had to read this book when I was alone in the house, so I could laugh out loud and roll on the floor without getting funny looks and scaring the dogs.
I thought the writing was excellent but I wished the book were longer. Maybe the author would consider a second book with more stories. The stories at the beginning were awesome, and I found myself sharing them with other folks I know. The ones at the middle and end grew more deeply personal and touched on some of what makes up a realistic and vivid faith that's more than just words and show. Highly recommend!
I read "Bucket" with enjoyment, dismay, empathy, and incredulity. I am not sure I agree with the Southern Gothic label assigned the work, but I do agree that it is overwhelmingly southern, even painfully so. I look forward to future Bryan works. A Pulitzer could well be in his future.
I live in the general area this takes place and it is so true-to-life of the times. I would really give this a 4.5, but don't want to give a 5 since it is not deathless prose, but fun.
A Bucket of Hooves is a wonderful glimpse into what life must really like growing up in the back hills and hollers of Georgia. Jeffrey's words ring true, funny, but poignant as they hold a mirror up to the realities, hardships and times of grace when he and his family wrestle with life and personal demons in the rural south. If his writing is so real, one can only imagine the imagery his preaching.
Brings back memories of growing up in the South and the unfortunate hippocracy and prejudice many of the religious right refuse to acknowledge. However, there are also the good, loving people portrayed in the book, which cancel out these other pharisaical, closed minded morons. True to life!
