Fans of Alternative History celebrate! Jason Vail's compelling new novel, Lonestar Rising, The Voyage of the Wasp is must-read literature, reminiscent of Eric Flint’s 1632.
The American rebellion has failed. George Washington is dead. The few surviving revolutionaries, led by Andrew Jackson, have fled to Spanish territories and the wasteland called Texas. But Jackson is not content to be a Spanish subject. He dreams large. Texas must be free and independent from the corrupt old empires of Europe. But with no army other than the Texas Rangers, and no navy, Texas has no hope of opposing the mighty forces of Spain. No hope, that is, until David Crockett meets an unemployed, sardonic naval officer named John Paul Jones II on the wharves at Baltimore. Together they buy and refit a broken down warship to become the first ship of the Texas Navy. With a handful of Crockett's men, the blessing of a voodoo queen, and a dubious crew of French pirates, they set sail to seize Spanish treasure and remake history in a ship called the Wasp.
Lone Star Rising The Voyage of the Wasp eBook Jason Vail
Vail's writing has reached the level of well established authors like Follett and Cussler. The Wasp is an excellent book for those who enjoy reading works of alternative history. Peppered with historical facts and enough mariner terms to satisfy Captain Ahab, the Wasp takes you to foreign lands, sea battles, and hand to hand combat through the eyes of its captain, Paul Jones.I gave the rating of five stars because the tale spinned is plausible and written in a fashion that kept my interest high. One could easily read the whole book in one, rather long, sitting as the story promises new adventures with every turn of the page. Clearly, Vail has spent a considerable time researching historical facts, geography, and manner of speech. His descriptions of close combat with swords and knives exhibit his extensive personal knowledge of the subject. One can close his eyes and easily visualize the gleaming of the weapons and the moves of the combatants.
Well done. Bravo!

Lone Star Rising The Voyage of the Wasp eBook Jason Vail Reviews
Jason Vail's Rise of the Lone Star Voyage of the Wasp is an curious piece of work. Presumably the beginning of a loose series, Wasp is a fully self-contained story which takes place in an alternate history where the American Revolution failed and, in 1820, the British still control the American colonies. Amidst all of this, General Andrew Jackson decides to carve out a new, free nation in Texas.
To do this, the General and his co-revolutionaries need money to fight off the Spanish and the British both. Enter John Paul Jones, son a real-world hero of American Naval history, whom Jackson and company hire to captain Texas's first (and only) naval vessel...as a privateer sailing the Wasp. Other well-known real-world figures from the 1820s make appearances, whether fleeting (Jean Lafitte and Jim Bowie) or as major supporting characters (Davy Crockett).
The result is a naval story, full of "larboard" this and "mizzen deck" that, all in the tradition of Pat Conroy. There's plenty of action and a bit of intrigue, too, amidst the joy that comes from seeing well-known historical characters thrust into a plausible "what if?"
Fans of Pat Conroy, Larry Turtledove, and Bernard Cornwell should all enjoy Vail's Voyage of the Wasp thoroughly.
How could anyone write a review about a book and criticize it without even reading it? I know everyone is a critic, but I always find it a waste of my time to belittle someone else's work. I typically only write reviews about things I can recommend to others...that's just me.
I am a big fan of Jason Vail's work. I have read his other historical fiction novels and while they have been chock full of type-o's (not his fault...that falls more to his publisher), they have been great reads with excellent characters and fascinating plots. In considering this book, I am not a big fan of "alternative history", but being a fan of Jason Vail's other books, I am certainly going to give this a read, especially after having read the sample on my . $9.99 is a bit steep for me in what I like to spend on kindle books, but I would gladly pay somewhere in the middle, as his other books on the kindle were dirt cheap and I wasn't sure how much the author actually made from his writing.
On a final note, Andrew Jackson was in fact nine in 1776, but Jackson isn't even mentioned until 1809...which I'm sure he would have been an adult by then and fully able to lead a militia. Don't let the negative reviews lead you away from trying out this author or purchasing this book...especially if they haven't actually read it. I am giving it five stars just so that I could hopefully balance out the negative response that comes from seeing a book with an average rating by bumping it up a little bit. But based on the sample I just read, this is going to be another fun read by a great story teller.
Instapundit compared this to Eric Flint's 1632 and while it has some good moments it doesn't really deliver on this. It's a good enough read to be mildly entertaining but doesn't really draw you in with the kind of character and plot development necessary for a good alt-history novel.
For those that love Texas. A very enjoyable book. I recommend to all Texas Patriots. I will read the sequel.
The concept is great. I have some friends that are history buffs and they kind of scowl at the concept, but I think that it is a great alternative history. I could not put it down and wanted to get to the end. Now I want to read the next one.
Jason Vail is an excellent author. He manages to pull the reader into the story from the beginning. I didn't want to stop reading. I always enjoy a story with unexpected twists and turns. Vail delivers. Excellent book. I didn't want it to end, but it ended well.
This precisely the type of story that I find exciting and thought provoking. History could have turned out quite differently if George Washington had been killed during the Revolutionary War. Nevertheless, the basic historical forces would have remained. Perhaps other leaders would have risen to take his place? This is the expertly told tale of one vision of what that British North American would have looked like.
When is the sequel going to be published?
